Plants the Deer Avoid - Southern Oregon
Here is my list of plants to consider when buying for deer resistance, for those of you who don't have a fence or prefer not to put up fencing to keep the deer out of your garden and off your land.
Rhododendrons - A great bordering shrub. Does very in Southern Oregon when well maintained in the proper acid soil. The blooms are beautiful and bursting with color!
Lavender - This is a classic and all time favorite shrub of mine due to it's beauty, fragrance, and pruning style that makes it very easy to enjoy and maintain. Prefers full sun with many different varieties differing in heights and widths. Excellent bordering shrub when planted strategically to border a walkway or driveway.
Heather - Low growing evergreen, bushy shrub. Full sun to part shade. Prefers well drained soil that is slightly acidic. Excellent color with flowers and different variations to choose from.
Holly - Another good bordering shrub/tree. Can be shaped to a hedge and the red berries make for good color when fruiting.
Ceanothus {Blue Blossom} - Beautiful blue flowers. Highly drought tolerant. Prefers full sun and high heat. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and beneficial insects. Evergreen foliage.
Bleeding Hearts - Another beautiful plant that is a work of art when it is in bloom! Prefers full sun and partial shade. Grows easily, looks good, and sprouts in early spring.
Erysimum - This is a wallflower perennial that prefers full sun. They grow between 24 and 30 inches in height and you can space them between 18 and 24 inches. They provide bright color and make for a reliable choice for containers, rock gardens and borders.
Vitex - This is the woman's herb, also known as Chaste Tree. It is an evergreen shrubby tree that prefers full sun. Fast growing, blooming summer to fall. Lavender-blue flowers that are fragrant. Great attractor of bees and beneficial insects. Good as shrub border and thrives in heat.
Vitex is also called Chaste Tree because traditionally in herbal medicine it is known as one of the best fertility herbs for women, when it comes to balancing hormones and regulating the menstrual cycle. It helps to support and encourage fertility in women.
