Mild Summer and Gearing Up for Fall - Southern Oregon
What up Everyone!
The weather we are having this summer is nothing short of a miracle with how bad the wildfire season was last summer and has been since 2011. Here is your August newsletter with a short note about our mild summer and gearing up for fall.
Watering should still be at the top of your list of items to stay on top of in your garden. Even with our current mild summer, we still have to get through the rest of August and September before we can be sure there are no more heat waves, smoke, and wildfires.
Gearing Up For Fall
Here in the Rogue Valley, fall is generally the most ideal time to do you planting projects. This is because as soon as the weather cools down and the rains start, you get 6 months of cool/wet weather to help establish proper rooting. Proper rooting requires cool weather and moisture to send the energy down into the roots where you want it.
With the summer we have been having though, this would generally be no problem as long as you have adequate water going to the roots after you do your planting and transplanting projects. This unique weather is going to most likely make better than usual soil/environmental conditions for your fall planting projects. These rains can also support a better harvest on your fruit trees coming into fruit now, and for the ones (apples/persimmons) that come ripe this fall.
Now is a good time to consider what you want to plant/transplant. With everything fully leafed out now, you can see where all your plants are at their full expanse with all the energy up in the top structures.
