Garden Planning for Next Year
Winter is a great time to think about how you want to improve your garden in the coming year. Here's some basic tips you can use in your planning.
Long form ways are best to build and maintain the value, health, and beauty of your land. This means deep root weeding, amending your soil, and mulching instead of using toxic chemicals.
Think ahead and do your homework. Take the time to look at the unique ecology of your garden and how the wild animals interact with it. Deer will most likely be a problem if you don't have a fence around the perimeter of you land they can't jump. Consider how you are going to protect your plants, and/or choose plants with thick milky leaves the deer avoid if deer are a problem in your area.
Look at whether or not you are in the forest or on the arid side of the valley. Make note of where the sun rises and sets. Take this into consideration with the large trees surrounding your land. This will show you where the shade areas are and where the sunny areas are. Consider the growth characteristics, care, drainage, and soil requirements of the plants you want to plant and already have.
