Creating Paver and Brick Pathways
When you work setting stone, it is important to settle it as you go to create solidity so your stone work stays solid and settled where you set it. Here are the basics that you can do when laying brick or pavers that lie flat on the ground when no cutting, mortar or sealing is required, as in garden and pathways on your land.
Use sand, decomposed granite or fine gravel to base underneath the items you'll be laying. This will help ensure drainage and fill in spaces below the stone for proper settling.
Make sure you leave 1/4 inch of runoff per foot when laying your pathways. You can pitch your path slightly to one side for this. Keep a level on hand for easy checking as you go.
Compact your items into the gravel/sand firmly by spraying with water and pounding them with your hand or rubber hammer so you know they are stable as you go piece by piece.
